It's kinda hard to review an album when the only words you have to say about it is positive worn out ones like: "Brilliant", "Masterpiece" and "Historic". But them words describes exactly what Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi's debut album is: A brilliant historic masterpiece.
Why?
Well, out of them 15 tracks slated for the regular version, the album consist of 15 good tracks. 15 out of 15... I honestly don't know if that has ever happened in my book. 'Pursuit of Happiness', 'Make Her Say', 'Solo Dolo' & 'Soundtrack 2 My Life' all have a place extra close to my heart (favouritism is hard when everything tastes divine), but every single track completes the other, it's just perfectly tailor made. Usually I'm head over heels in love with 3 tracks (often the odd numbered ones like track #3, #7 & #11 for some strange reason) and I have at least 1-3 tracks, that I simply hate and wanna dissect like cow eyes at a high school lab why they are so terrible, but they are completely missing.
It feels strange to have nothing to complain about actually. Or wait, perhaps that narrator voice rubs me the wrong way sometimes. Narrating is for movies and books, music is supposed to be music, let the music tell the story.
I'm not gonna lie, as some of you know at first I hated Cudder's guts, thought that "oh well, another hipster rapper jumping on house, no need for him". I was quick to judge. So quick I gave that "A Kid Name CuDi"-mixtape one listen then binned it. But one day 'Day N' Nite' got me hooked, 'Man on the Moon' made me an complete cudderholic.
Sure, "Man on the Moon : The End of Day" sometimes just oozes KanYe West's "808's & Heartbreak" as it's very emotional and melodramatic but CuDi actually pulls it off better than KanYe. The album is more held together, it's one story. Productions are more interesting and them features from MGMT, Ratatat and others also plays a big part.
It's also cause of CuDi's ability to work with almost everyone I rate him so high as I do. He makes me listen to thing I would never ever hit play on, such as 3OH!3's 'Don't Trust Me'. CuDi's verse on that Benny Blanco remix is amazing.
If I rated albums on a scale 1-5 (with 5 being the greatest), I'd actually give "Man on the Moon: The End of Day" a solid fiver. It totally deserves it. Dunno how many times I've listened the whole album through now, I still find new things to love about it.
KiD CuDi proves that hip-hop is far from dead, he just turned it smart and beautiful again, in other words, your pretty stupid if you don't buy this!
ps. In case you haven't peeped this over at MBFIMG yet: Swedish rapper Pato Pooh does a pretty nyce job over my fave Cudder-track of all time 'Man on the Moon', this production still makes me eyes tear up (no joke).
